Portrait of filmmaker Nicholas Galligan
Nicholas Galligan · Colorado, USA

Nicholas Galligan is a filmmaker, writer, game designer, and entrepreneur working across narrative film, interactive storytelling, and emerging creative technology.

His creative work has moved through several mediums, but it keeps returning to a single question:

What happens when people are placed inside systems larger than themselves?

The stories that follow tend to concern humanity's future, warfare, loyalty, fatherhood, technology, civilization, power, violence, morality and survival — usually all at once, because in practice those things are not separable.

A background in competitive gaming and game design shaped an unusually systems-oriented approach to world-building. Rather than starting exclusively with plot, he develops the world first: its rules, institutions, history, technologies, conflicts, and the people living inside them. Then he asks what happens when those systems collide.

Method

01 — The world

Geography, resources, and who controls them.

02 — The rules

Law, technology, economy, and what they make possible.

03 — The institutions

Who enforces the rules and who profits from them.

04 — The history

The wars, treaties and grudges everyone inherited.

05 — The people

Characters shaped by all of it, wanting something anyway.

06 — The collision

The film begins where those systems fail at once.
